Specialty | I was trained in medicine and doctoral degree in the parasite cell biolog. I am currently a senior research fellow at the Malaria and Vector Resistance Unit at the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology, Jakarta and Professor and chairman of the Department of Parasitology, Faculty of Medicine, Hasanuddin University, Makassar, Indonesia. I joined the Eijkman Institute in 1993 as a post doctoral research fellow and was involved in a research project to elucidate the role of the extrachromosomal DNAs in the assembly of the mitochondrial energy transducing membrane of the malarial parasite. My current research activities include molecular mechanisms underlying Plasmodium resistance to antimalarial drug, antimalarial drug discovery, molecular taxonomy of the mosquito vector and the molecular studies on the vector resistance to insecticides. | ||||
Science Interest (Past) |
1. Molecular biology of the energy transducing membrane of the malaria parasite, to elucidate the cellular function of the two extrachromosomal DNAs in the malarial parasites
2. Molecular mechanisms underlying Plasmodium resistance to antimalarial drugs, particularly mitochondrial inhibitors 3. Molecular taxonomy of the parasite based on the mitochondrial DNA sequence |
